First and foremost, let me set the record straight. I am majoring in Illustration, and minoring in Digital Design. Initially, digital design was SOLELY a requirement from my VA education counselor because I intend to pursue a career as a tattoo artist. While that job can be quite lucrative for a determined artist with dedication, the metrics used to understand certain careers are just not easily ascertained. My counselor suggested I pursue a minor in Digital Design because that is a career field with decades of information regarding the different metrics one typically uses when assessing careers.
Nothing in that first paragraph is intended denigrate the field of Digital Design. I have very much enjoyed every class I have taken for this minor, and along the way I have grown skills that I likely would not have learned.
Digital Design touches so many parts of our lives. Basically every piece of technology you use that has any sort of User Interface (UI) or User Experience (UX) attached to it, was designed by someone with a degree in Digital Design. That enormous ad marquee you passed while walking downtown? Digital Design. Menu at your favorite restaurant? You guessed it, Digital Design.
What I truly enjoyed the most thus far, is getting experience creating in 3D rendering engines. Not only can 3D rendering software be great for creating an immersive environment, but you can use it help you design a 2D environment with accurate depth and flow. Portraying a three-dimensional environment with a two-dimensional medium can be difficult to create. 3D rendering programs allow you to quickly and easily render a rudimentary three-dimensional space with whatever dimensions you want, and then begin translating that to a two-dimensional drawing.
The world of Digital Design is a lush playground with endless possibilities for creation. Now, lets get to work.
